Seaton is a small seaside town nestling between hills at the mouth of the river Axe. The Victorian & Edwardian town is mainly a retirement area, with a significant proportion of elderly population. To both the east and the west of Seaton itself, the shoreline is mainly cliffs for several miles, leaving the town and adjacent river as the only landing places for craft. Following serious flooding suffered in a violent storm in 1980, the current sea wall was built above the shingle & pebble beach, although a small harbour still exists at the river mouth. Other than the two holiday centres, which form the only significant local industry, there was one tourist attraction, being the electric tramway, which runs from the town centre to Colyford and Colyton. This is believed to be the only remaining tramway in the world still using open top tram cars on a regular commercial basis. The tramline runs around the perimeter of much of the Warners camp site where we first saw the Starmakers team in action. Seaton also happened to be quite close to Slade Farm, the original home of the Elisabeth Svendson Trust Donkey Sanctuary - where Chrissies love affair with those gentle and lovable animals began. |
